Refractive Lens Exchange in New York, NY
More and more people in New York and Manhattan are choosing refractive lens exchange for improved quality of life. Although refractive lens exchange is similar to cataract surgery, the reasons for performing the surgery are different. Refractive lens exchange is performed for patients whose natural lenses have insufficient power to permit a clear vision without visual aids. Refractive lens exchange is recommended for patients who are not candidates for laser eye surgery.
Nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and certain other conditions can be treated with refractive lens exchange.
A refractive lens exchange is for New York and Manhattan residents who:
- Want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts
- May not be a good candidate for laser vision correction
- Are between 45 and 75 years of age
- Have no health issues affecting their eyes
Cataracts are a part of the normal aging process, and if a person lives long enough, chances are they will develop cataracts. Those who choose to have refractive lensectomy now will not require future cataract surgery.
The Refractive Lens Exchange Procedure:
Dr. Bonanni performs the refractive lens exchange procedure on an outpatient basis and treats only one eye at a time. First, a topical or local anesthesia is used to completely numb the eye. Through a tiny incision, about one eighth of an inch wide, the eye’s natural lens will then be gently vacuumed out.
The new, intraocular lens will then be folded and inserted through the incision. Once inside, it will be unfolded and placed into the “capsular bag” that originally surrounded the natural lens. The incision usually requires no stitches and seals on its own. It remains tightly closed by the natural outward pressure within the eye. This type of incision heals fast and provides a much more comfortable recuperation.
The Benefits of Refractive Lens Exchange:
- Quick visual recovery
- Permanent results without the use of a laser
- Eliminates the need for cataract surgery in the future
- Eliminates the dependence on glasses and contact lenses
